McSally Sponsors New Gun Legislation
(KFYI News) – A new bill in Congress not only prevents the mentally-ill from getting firearms, it expands mental-health identification and treatment.
And an Arizona congresswoman’s sponsoring it.
Martha McSally (R-District 2) says her bipartisan bill’s endorsed by a wide range of groups including the National Rifle Association, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and the National Association of Police Organizations.
“Preventing gun violence in our communities is something we all want, but too often, Democrats and Republicans end up just talking past each other,” she said in a written statement. “This bill has bipartisan support and puts forward solutions that can actually make a difference.”
The Mental Health and Safe Communities Act improves the background check system; enhances the ability of families and communities to identify mental illness; and expands funding for mental-health treatment. McSally says the bill also strengthens responses to mental health crises.
