Police sweeten their image with free Slurpees
Thanks to 7-11’s “Operation Chill” initiative, police officers across the state will be handing out free Slurpee coupons to local kids, with hopes that the coupons will open the door to positive interactions.
Police departments in Peoria, Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, Gilbert and Tempe are all participating and will hand out roughly 9,000 coupons this summer.
The program began in Philadelphia in 1995 as a way for police officers to reward young kids for staying out of trouble in the summer and during back-to-school months. Over the past 20 years, it has gifted more than 14 million free Slurpees. Another 1.25 million are expected to be given out this year by 885 police departments across the country.
