Preparing for the 2009 legislative session
(Posted: Dec. 11, 2008)
AZCOPS leaders are meeting this month with elected officials at the state level in preparation for the 2009 legislative session. President Larry Lopez met recently with Secretary of State Jan Brewer, who will become Governor in January. She will replace current Gov. Janet Napolitano, who was appointed by President-elect Barak Obama as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
State Rep. Andy Biggs will introduce a Due Process bill for AZCOPS. Similar to the legislation that was held in the Senate in 2008, the bill will hold employers accountable when union representation is not provided during the initial stages of a personnel investigation.

Lopez, Chief of Staff Tim Clark, AZCPOA President Tixoc Munoz and Ebratt discussed broad issues of concern to AZCOPS members and requested that Brewer keep in place an Executive Order that allows state correctional officers to Meet and Confer with DOC Administration.
“Secretary Brewer told us that public safety will be a top priority in her administration,” said Lopez. “AZCOPS had a good working relationship with Gov. Napolitano and we’re looking forward to another positive relationship in this new administration.”
